Preheat oven to 450 degrees F (230 degrees C).
Mix the all-purpose flour, whole wheat flour, baking powder, sugar and salt in a large bowl. Cut in cold butter with 2 knives or a pastry blender until mixture resembles coarse crumbs; stir in buttermilk until moistened.
Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface; gently knead 8-10 times. Roll out to about 3/4 inch thick. Use a 2 1/2-inch round cookie cutter to cut cookies; roll out any pieces to cut more cookies. Place the cookies on an ungreased baking sheet.
Bake in the preheated oven until the cookies are golden brown, 10-12 minutes.
