Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C). Lightly oil a 9x13-inch baking pan.
Put 1/2 of the potatoes, 1/2 of the cheese, then the rest of the potatoes in a layer in the prepared dish.
Melt the butter in a small skillet over medium heat. Fry the garlic until fragrant and golden brown; pour potatoes.
Combine cream, salt and pepper; evenly pour over the potatoes and sprinkle with the remaining cheese.
Bake in a preheated oven for 75 minutes. Serve immediately.
