About This Recipe

The onion burger is the most unusual and original of all possible burgers, as it doesn't have the usual bun! A juicy patty is placed between two layers of caramelized onion, cheese and spicy sauce are added, resulting in a dish with an incredibly appetizing appearance and a bright, unconventional, and memorable flavor! To properly prepare the onion, it is sprinkled with salt and sugar and cooked over low heat, ideally in a skillet with a ridged bottom – an extra detail that won't hurt the dish's presentation! After preparing the onion layers, focus on the patties. Our step-by-step recipe details how to make a patty with a cheese filling, the kind often called a double! Then, quickly assemble the burger and immediately eat it yourself or treat a friend!

Preparation Steps

1

Step 1

Prepare hot sauce. Place mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard and sriracha sauce in a small bowl. Add honey and balsamic vinegar and whisk to combine. Set the finished sauce aside until serving.

2

Step 2

Prepare caramelized onions. Heat olive oil in a griddle or large heavy skillet for 1 minute. Cut the peeled onion crosswise into 1 cm thick slices. You will need 4 of the largest mugs.

3

Step 3

Place the onion in a frying pan, add salt and sprinkle with sugar. Cook the onion over low heat for 5 minutes. Carefully turn over to the other side and sprinkle with a little sugar and salt again.

4

Step 4

Continue frying the onions for another 2 minutes. The onion should be nicely browned when cut. Place a slice of cheese on the onion mugs, cook for another 30 seconds and remove the pan from the heat.

5

Step 5

Prepare the cutlets. Divide the minced meat into 4 parts, form each into a ball. Place the meat ball on a board or sheet of baking paper and flatten it into a round shape. Season with salt and pepper.

6

Step 6

Heat the butter and olive oil in a frying pan for 1 minute. Arrange the cutlets, brush the top side with a small amount of mustard. Fry the cutlets over medium heat for 3 minutes. Turn the cutlets over to the other side, place slices of cheese on two of them and fry for another 2 minutes. When the cheese begins to melt, place the remaining two patties without cheese on it, press lightly with a spatula and transfer to a plate.

7

Step 7

Collect the burgers. Place two onion circles on a plate, cheese side up. Place a double cutlet on each and brush with sauce. Top with remaining onions, cheese side down, and serve burgers immediately.

Enjoy your meal!
