About This Recipe

Rice and lentil porridge with bacon is not quite porridge, but almost a pilaf. The combination of rice with lentils might seem rather exotic to some. However, connoisseurs of Middle Eastern cuisine are surely familiar with mujaddara - a vegetarian dish where the main ingredients are lentils and rice. This dish is traditionally served in all cafes and snack bars in North African countries and Israel. Our recipe is very similar to this eastern specialty. But we decided to make it more filling by adding bacon. Prepare rice and lentil porridge with bacon for lunch or dinner if you want to surprise your loved ones and delight them with something unusual yet very tasty.

Preparation Steps

Step 1

Cook the rice in boiling salted water until done. Peel and chop the shallots and garlic. Set aside 50g of bacon and cut the rest into 1cm pieces.

Pour 1.2 liters of water over the lentils and bring to a boil. Add chopped bacon, shallots and garlic and simmer over low heat for 30 minutes.

Season the lentils with olive oil, curry powder, dried ginger, salt and pepper. Cook for another 15 minutes.

Step 4

Stir in the rice, remove from heat, cover with a lid and towel, and let sit for 10 minutes. Fry the remaining bacon and place on top of the porridge. Drizzle the dish with olive oil.
