Stir the milk, cream, and sugar in a saucepan over low heat until the sugar dissolves. Heat until the mixture is hot and a small ring of foam forms around the edge.
Transfer the cream mixture to a pourable container, such as a large measuring cup. Add the vanilla extract and chill the mixture thoroughly for at least 2 hours. (Best left overnight.)
Pour the cold ice cream mixture into the ice cream maker, turn on the machine and churn according to the manufacturer's instructions for 20-25 minutes.
When the ice cream is soft, serve immediately or place a piece of plastic wrap directly over the ice cream and place in the freezer to ripen for 2-3 hours.
